El término Bantú se refiere a cualquier individuo perteneciente a los más de 400 grupos étnicos de pueblos melanoafricanos que viven al sur de una línea que va desde Duala (Camerún) hasta la desembocadura del Yuba (Somalia). No comprenden un tipo racial ni una cultura uniformes. Sus creencias son animistas, salvo las de aquellos grupos cristianizados o islamizados. Hablan distintas lenguas de la familia bantú.
